Can you use dr bronners on dogs or cats?

We live in Southern California and have two small dogs. I know that DR. Bronner's Soap is not recommended for dogs. I was looking for something else that would get me through the day with something different that didn't contain harsh chemicals. I love DR. Bronner's Soap but want to find something that isn't so bad on our animals.

I just wanted to know if you could use DR. Bronners on your dogs. They are really small dogs and have sensitive skin, and I'd like to have a safe soap for them. My husband and I love DR. Bronner's Soap for humans, and I'd love for them to be safe for our animals.

I just want to make sure that I won't poison them and my husband feels the same way. I know that the shampoo I use is good for my dogs and they don't even get a smell of it. I was looking for a good alternative and DR. Bronner's is what came up.

If you have sensitive skin, and you can't use anything made for humans, I think it would be best to do a trial on a smaller area, and not use on the face. I'd recommend the DR. Bronners Peppermint soap or the Salve. You could also use the Salve on your dog's skin in smaller quantities, and see if you can't use it a few times.

If you are going to use it on your pet's face, only use the smallest amount possible to see how it feels on them. Use only the Salve or the Peppermint soap. If you do use it on your dog's face and it doesn't work for them, cut back the next time, and try again. If it does work on them, you'll know it's something they can tolerate.

I have small dogs that don't get much soap in their face. I have used the Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap to clean their faces and it's worked for them. It may be a bit mild for big dogs, but it works for them. I would suggest the Salve.

Thanks for the ideas. I will definitely take your suggestions and do some trial and error. I think I'll order the soap for now and start with one or two times on them until I know how they will react. I know they will not tolerate it if I use anything on them and say it smells like humans.

Your answers were more or less what I was looking for. If they get a scent from it, it is bad.

As for if it can be used multiple times, they won't be able to tell. That's the beauty of it. As long as it doesn't burn them, they can keep washing with it.

I used the salve for a month, and I couldn't stand it. My fur is still not completely clean. I went back to the soap because I love the smell and it works very well for me. My dog's hair is extremely soft and they never have any odor. I'll give the salve a try and see how it goes.

I was just wondering how much of the soap do you use to bathe? Is it a lot? For me it just doesn't work because of the cost. I am on a budget and the cost on the Dr. Bronner's soap is just too high for me.

Re: I bought soap and it was bad for my dog

I use a quarter of a cap for one bath, and I think that's plenty.

I can only think of two other things, and that is that your dog needs to get a lot of conditioning. Either that or, and this one may be the easiest to get around, have your dog bathe once a month with a completely new bottle of shampoo.

And, of course, the only way to find out is to give it a try and see what happens.

If it doesn't do a bit of damage, go for it. It's not like you're committing to that much of a product.

My dog is an indoor dog, so I'm not sure if I have to worry about the water.

Thanks so much for your help! It is always good to be able to talk with people who are doing things on a smaller scale than you are, because you learn about their processes and I think it's much easier to adapt things to your own way.

I really appreciate it, I do a lot of reading on a daily basis and it is really important for me to support people doing good work, so thanks for taking the time to help me.

Re: I bought soap and it was bad for my dog

Thanks all for your replies. Sorry to say it but I am going to follow what I've heard from the people at DR. Bronner's: don't use it. At first I went ahead and used it and my dog only had a few problems after using the Dr. Bronner's soap. I used two cups for my whole bath and she did not have any issues. The following day I switched to LUSH for a week and there was a complete difference. Within a day my dog was smelling much better than she had been in the past month or so. She seemed to like it and I wasn't bothered by the smell anymore. I decided I should really do a trial and see how it goes. Thanks again!

Great, thanks for your post. It's great to hear that you were able to experiment with the two types of soap that you could find. Your dog sounds like she's doing very well. Best of luck to you!

I ended up using the Dr. Bronner's because I couldn't get any of the other types.

Did you try the unscented one? I have the unscented and I use it on everything. I didn't think of trying Dr. Bronners unscented because I used it as my last option. I thought maybe they had the unscented that didn't "feel like soap" so to speak.

No, I only bought that one. I didn't know the unscented was available. It didn't come in a bag though. I bought it in a box, in "soap" form, from the LUSH store.
